    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

https://calgaryherald.com/opinion/columnists/varcoe-downtown-calgary-west-side-conversion-redevelopment-local-players The Herald is giving a lot of attention to downtown this week. Some interesting data about office vacancies.

I don't think anything other than a bridge for the C train is necessary. A short distance to the west is the pedestrian bridge on Princes Island and a short distance to the east is the Centre St bridge.

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

Originally, the entertainment district along Stampede Way was designed to be a destination (a Margaritaville location was planned among others). That together with the event center & BMO expansion would become the year round draw. From that the empty parking lots surrounding would be be turned...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

https://calgaryherald.com/business/downtown-businesses-struggle-with-low-traffic-hoping-for-boost-from-new-projects For those that are downtown either living or working, this is no surprise. However it does confirm that even without COVID closures and restrictions for an extended period of...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

I have to believe that 2022-24 will be bounce back years for nat gas drilling. I own stocks in Tourmaline and a few junior companies and they will definitely be spending in preparation for LNG export in 2025. While they are rewarding shareholders, they are raising their cap-ex spending as well.

Thanks for digging this out, Darwink. It would seem that the 75% foreign investor statement by the analyst was perhaps based on the oil sands only (assuming that Stats Can info is accurate). However his overall statement and subject of the article was more broadly about the 'oil & gas industry'...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

Mr Arnaud states "The big difference is that about 75 per cent of those shareholders are not Canadian, meaning the money is flowing almost completely out of the province and Canada, according to St-Arnaud. Though there's about 25 per cent left over, those shareholders are spread across all of...

    Weather and Gardening Discussion

Sort of balances an above average October. I am just glad that we are above zero for a long stretch to finish the month. That few days of -20 was a rude awakening.

I can only imagine what it is costing the city to buy out all those owners. The total cost of this project now that the station is going underground is going to be staggering.

https://globalnews.ca/news/9286781/canada-cop27-fossil-fuel-phaseout-agreement/ Coming from our Minister of the Environment....this is positive in that the federal government at least recognizes that it cannot commit to the phase out of oil & gas without a plan and agreement with the provinces...

    Eau Claire Market Redevelopment | 135.02m | 35s | Harvard Developments

Anyone buying a brand new condo in the core for investment purposes the last time we had a boom (around 2006-2008, followed by the Great Recession pause, then another boom say from 2011-14), is probably still 'under water'. Sure if they have been fortunate to have a steady stream of renters...

    Alberta Provincial Politics

My point is that the carbon tax ... high or low ... is not having the desired impact. It is another tax buried in a price or cost along with a multitude of other taxes that we pay on just about everything we consume. On top of that there have been inflationary increases (some due to higher...

    Alberta Provincial Politics

It is just another tax that is buried in the price of things. With raging inflation, Canadians just know prices are going up and up and carbon taxes are just another contributor to that. The tax was introduced as a means to discourage people form emitting carbon through everyday activities i.e...

Hmm ... that definitely looks like the Bucci logo. However townhouses are not their 'thing'. I know they have given up on the Calgary condo market so perhaps this is a way of staying active in this market. It does not appear on their website under 'Future Projects' though...

    Eau Claire Market Redevelopment | 135.02m | 35s | Harvard Developments

By doing this, the developer would not be maximizing ROI. Remember, the original proposal was for 5 towers (residential + commercial) plus retail & entertainment components in the space where the market and parking lot currently are. That is a lot of density.

    Calgary International Airport

Yeah, I can't imagine there would be too many Albertans wanting to go to Dubai during their brutally hot & humid summers. However, summer would be the best season to attract Middle Easterners to Banff/Lake Louise. West Jet and Alberta Tourism should conduct some kind of test marketing campaign...

The developer is noted as Cantana Investments. Never heard of them. No previous history so I assume it is some kind of holding company. Anyone know who or what is behind them?

    US Politics

The mid term elections are over and some tight races have yet to be settled. However it looks like the Republicans will have a slight majority in the House. The Senate could remain tied or either party could pick up one more seat which could change the balance in the Republicans favour. Either...

    Scotia Place | 36.85m | 11s | CSEC | HOK

Everyone including CMLC should care about a new arena as apparently the current one is falling apart. ... literally. However, the main reason they should care is that a new arena is also the center piece for development of all of the empty lots along 11 and 12 Ave. Until the arena gets going...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

Pretty much echo's other assessments I have read. Past booms resulted from investment in new production and spinoffs from that. More and higher paying jobs were created and more spending was done by all. Now, very little investment is directed to expansion. Investment capital from outside the...
