    The Great Canadian Tariff Thread

That is wishful thinking. The US political system is too decentralized and too complex to move towards authoritarianism. Most important, individualism runs strong in the American psyche. Someone will challenge Trump.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Why blur accountability even more? Municipalities mostly provide local services, so why involve the Federal government which should focus on non-local issues like defence, trade and border security?

    The Great Canadian Tariff Thread

Trump may act like he has all the power, but he doesn't. He can't extend or end term limits as that would require approval of 75% of the states - never going to happen. US politics is a perpetual campaign. Several GOP Congressional seats will be at risk if the tariffs carry on more than a few...

    The Great Canadian Tariff Thread

Any combination of higher interest rates or higher prices will indisputably be real. Americans generally react very badly to anything that interferes with consumption. Money in US politics more or less cancels out. For every dollar of pro-Trump PAC spending, there is a dollar of of anti-Trump.

    The Great Canadian Tariff Thread

Until it isn't. Most of Congress wants to be re-elected. Trump can't run again and no one else can have the cult of personality to pick up the MAGA torch. Once enough Congressman fear they will lose their seats due to increased prices, they will distance themselves from Trump. Americans tend to...

    The Great Canadian Tariff Thread

Congress will eventually overturn most if not all of Trump's EO's. It is likely waiting for Trump's approval rating to sink, which will happen soon. Nothing turns Americans against their government more than increased prices.

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

This would require devaluing certain stakeholder groups such as climate change and indigenous rights activists, the Feds and Provinces sticking to their own jurisdictions and Parliament willing to expend political capital to push back on the Courts and Quebec Sovereigntists. The Harper...

Proposals for that site have historically been a leading indicator of a real estate crash

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

I am thinking that the floor would also be a de facto ceiling on payments to allegedly have not provinces. In Canada, for example, keeping 80% of federal receipts in Alberta would been lowering federal spending in Quebec. I don't see how the ability of individual provinces/states to raise their...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

Solution would be some combination of: reducing federal taxes and allowing the provinces to raise their taxes to compensate, with the Feds cutting per capita transfers by the same dollar total something similar to Australia that sets a floor on the percentage of federal receipts collected in a...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

Isn't the first paragraph rather ironic in that tax revenue from SK is now being showered on Montreal?

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

Income capacity is difficult to measure. The Feds' current measure is ridiculously gamed to favor Quebec, the most egregious example being including non-renewable resource revenue, in effect asset sales, but not including electricity exports.

A few comments: -how long would a light rail tunnel need to be under 85th to get from the currently planned terminus to WD? -does ROW exist beyond WD to extend light rail to a park n ride along Stoney? -could WD eventually expand westward into the lands still occupied by radio towers, to...
