    Calgary Municipal Politics

A couple of canvassers from Barrett's team came by my place a few weeks ago and honestly I wasn't impressed, they didn't do a good job of explaining his platform or why I should vote for him. Atkinson and one of his team members came by also and I found we were able to have a good conversation...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

With the FAR they are going for I am sure it will be quite tall - probably at least 40 floors - but I fear they are a bit late to the game compared with the likes of Truman, One Properties and Vesta, and may miss this development cycle.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Looking at the air photo of the site, and considering tower separation policies etc, I don't think this will be designed as an extension of Keynote, and I'm betting we'll see something with a more conventional floorplate. Some of the floorplans in those towers are rather awkward and inefficient.

If it were, hypothetically, ever built, could Cavalry FC play out of there?

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

Would Quebec City make more sense from the perspective of being able to handle those larger containerships? I would think so since they can accommodate big cruise ships. Would seem to somewhat solve the problem of Halifax (isolation) since it's only a couple hours east of Montreal and thus...

    Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

My experience aligns with the "underperforming" - while I was personally very impressed with the service, both times I took it the trains were nearly empty. It's a great deal for solo travellers, but if you get a family of 3 or more it's probably cheaper to take a taxi.

    Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

I took the UP Express in the summer and one good thing about it is the comfort level is comparable to an inter city train rather than a subway/LRT/commuter train, including very comfortable seats and bathrooms.

Bummer. I prefer the FAAS design.

    Kensington Mixed Use | 20m | 6s | Westrich Pacific | J+S Architect

This project is going nearly as slowly as Harmony. At this rate, Kit Kensington is going to be finished before this, even though it started many months later.

    Broadway on 17th | 154m | 47s | Vesta | Zeidler

I hope to be proven wrong someday but until I see some actual construction there, I see that "midtown" scheme as nothing more than a huge land lift.

    Broadway on 17th | 154m | 47s | Vesta | Zeidler

I think Chinook area is already gradually transforming into a sort of "midtown", and the new multi stuff starting up there will ensure that continues. Chinook, Brentwood, Westbrook and North Hill all have great potential for intensification. I don't even care that much whether these nodes end...

    120 - 17th Ave NW | 20m | 6s | Nay Developments | CTZN

It'll be nice to see the parcel filled in. Between this and Kit's project a block south, hundreds of new residents will be coming to the area.

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

I'd argue that tech can be just as volatile as O&G. in the early 2000's tech crash, San Jose was hit hard and so were Canadian tech hubs like Ottawa and KW. I'd rather see Calgary continue to diversify its economy, with aerospace, distribution, film industry, etc increasing their share of the...

    120 - 17th Ave NW | 20m | 6s | Nay Developments | CTZN

New DP in Tuxedo for a 176 unit building, architect is C1ZN Architecture. Developer is "Nay Development". It's located west of Centre St on a currently vacant lot. Also there's some brick on there which is nice to see. Would certainly be nice to lose a vacant lot in the area.

    Calgary Municipal Politics

It does seem that way...I am far from an expert on polls but they seem to be sort of useless at municipal level.

    Sunnyside Triangle Site | 20.8m | 6s | Attainable Homes Calgary | ATCO

If they value engineer away those random rectangles, I think it'd look fine. And on the bright side, regardless of how it turns out, it's filling an important need for affordable housing.

Hmmm, based on that last pic it actually looks OK.

    Broadway on 17th | 154m | 47s | Vesta | Zeidler

Nope, not approved yet. I think they had to also do a land use redesignation which might have been approved. But the DP will likely need to go to Calgary Planning Commission for approval.

    Marsh Road Mixed Use | 20m | 6s | Jackson McCormick

Excellent, I didn't even know about this one. Decent design, and appropriate scale for Edmonton Tr. I agree that the ground floor treatment isn't ideal, but I think that's more a result of the site context than the design.
