This is an interesting question since it could be argued that most people having no idea about it should be the reason that more commemoration is needed.

confirmed on Friday that the most westerly house is included, apparently there was a bunch of last second changes with the 2 most westerly houses (owners were wary of participating because they wanted to sell, new owners were on board). So it's the whole block.

Yeah whenever I discuss this I think of Yonge st and how it leads 50+ kms through Toronto and then as a highway in more or less a straight line whereas Calgary only let Centre st go 10 kms before messing it all up.

🤮 In all seriousness though, this is a landmark event. That site has been stinking up Ramsay for many decades and before that it was industrial storage. What ever goes there in the future will be an improvement over every previous use as long as Calgary has been a place.

Just imagining the aroma of demolition + dust suppression water spray + chicken factory. Glad it's not a summer demo.

One last one is Beaver Dam Rd 1922/24 It existed as late as 1957 Then development chopped it up, today only small part remains Much of which has never been paved in it's 100+ year history Interestingly right where it starts there is a house from the 1940s

You can also see similar for Symons Valley Road. It originally took a left off of centre Most of that right of way is now park except for Bernard Dr Then a similar thing happens again Only coming back to the original route past Stoney Trail. It actually kind of irritates me when...

Interesting, that pond was the then landlocked curve in Nose Creek that was now bypassed by the straightening of the creek The bridge is from when it was still part of the creek 1966

As an example, there used to be a cluster of farms/rural houses up around 6th St and McKnight NE from even before the 1920s One thing to note is what is now 41 Avenue as shown on the photo was until the 1950s or 60 the part of Edmonton trail where it tilted towards the east to join up with...

Calgary Imagery historic airphoto site discussion thread

This a terrible title but I couldn't think of anything better. I wanted to start a thread about the Calgary Imagery site (https://maps.calgary.ca/CalgaryImagery/Imagery/) which is a GIS which allows you to overlay 37 different years of airphotos between 1924 and 2022. It's a super useful tool...

I find it fascinating not just to see how buildings have changed but also roads. Sometimes country roads are completely erased, sometimes they are reused and sometimes just random portions of them still exist no longer connected.

Actually the AMA and medium density to the north of it was a drive in movie from the mid 1950s until around 1980, although it may have been abandoned during a portion of that time. The AMA building and housing were all built by 1982 1979 1982 Today

I like this. It's good density by an LRT station and it's north of the SFH so no shadowing concerns. I'd like to see similar on the block just to the west. And I'm not sure if it was foresight or just luck but just north of the AMA is 4 story multifamily going down to 2 story multifamily. Just...

Less interesting architecture, low rise density, and with a purpose to try to drive the local indie shop out of business, what's not to hate?

If I remember correctly this might be the first example of a Heritage Direct Control area which is one of the heritage incentives put into place recently. From DMAP: I'm very curious about this as the description of what a heritage DC does has been rather vague: While heritage areas have...

Looking at the shadow studies I think it would make more sense to even out the building heights vs low rise plus quite tall towers. The shadowing of a few blocks in Haysboro is kind of brutal, I'd hate to live in those houses. I don't really get the complaints about traffic though, it's a...
