The area around Edmonton can also be quite beautiful, especially in the summer. Abundant lake land and cottage country. Impossibly long days. The people are hardy. I live in St. Albert myself, though I grew up in Calgary. + Calgary gets huge benefit from being satellite to an industrial centre...

The CMR should reach about 2 million by the end of this decade :)

This really blows. But IMO there is also hope that he moves against fracking in the medium term as he is clearly unafraid of the oil lobby. On the other hand it is somewhat predictable, and why many people felt it foolish for the province to invest considerable public funds into what amounted...

IMO our CMA will be expanded to include most of those regions in the next 10 years. Edmonton's is way bigger, and Calgary proper is mostly growing in those directions at the moment.

Might be unrealistic, but as we have seen relatively consistent population growth over the last 20 years, seemingly independent of economic conditions: My calculation if we grow with the same consistency over the next 20 year period will have the CMA at 2,613,900 by 2040. At 1.8%/ year...

I am very encouraged to see capital flowing into these Alberta tech startups. Next ones I am watching out for are the AI involved spin offs from Deep Mind in Edmonton- AltaML is an interesting one for example.

Is it just me or does this feel like a big personalized F-U to all of us critics lol. Why on earth would you highlight just that section of the building...

Welcome to the new baby club! Mine is now 15 months with our second due in June. It is the best time of your life but prepare for the following things (aka here is my totally unsolicited advice that I am now giving to you!): - it will be difficult to focus on other things (like work) for a...

    Covid-19

He had another good article this morning. Rick Bell is ANGRY. I feel it too... I was waiting out front of timmies for the lady to drop off my back of timbits and a few take 12s I am coffee bribing folks with today. There was a group of 3 older males sitting in their cars with their windows...

Wildly optimistic to hope for a canadian oil boom within 5 years. Even so, a "boom" wont be the same as last time as you've already identified it is unlikely massive new projects (plants) are undertaken. The construction and spin off going wild is important to the "boom".

I largely agree with your points, but I want to caution that invoking the Holocaust is a dog whistle tactic that is likely just to diminish your overall argument. It's true, Kenney's opinion of "freedoms" is not mired in a factual basis, instead it is a political avenue to encourage the...

    Covid-19

If the government had enacted these measures when Drs first recommended them (November 9th) we could be talking about a semi-normal (not normal, but semi) christmas. The government did not "trust the public", the government willfully chose to espouse libertarian views contrary to almost every...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

The problem I have, and I am sure I am not unique in this, is the growing disparity in collections from corporate tax vs personal tax. Example: in 2012, the corporate tax rate was at 10%. Corporate tax was responsible for (4,756/37,502*100) 12.7% of the total own source revenue, while personal...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

I have seen this presentation, but it does not align with the findings of the Canadian Energy Regulator, which only accounted for "green" initiatives against traditional O & G continuing at the same pace rather than accelerating. That estimate had peak production of the oilsands topping out in...

I wonder what it would cost in todays dollars to do that proposed extension of Calgary tower to 300m that would make it worthwhile again.

I disagree with your assessment. If traditional O & G is our primary economic engine 3 decades from now we are screwed. I believe you are making an emotional assessment of an industry based on history. What you are essentially asking is for everyone to join in a shared delusion that is not...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

I'm not advocating for shuttering or ignoring anything, but cut the shit favoritism. Let's start actually investing money into the outcomes that have horizons long past 50 years. And most of all let's stop sacrificing investment to Education and Healthcare to prop up international investment...
