    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I agree, the thing is, downtown revitalization will never work unless people are part of the equation. We know having office workers as the people part of the equation doesn’t work, the people part of the equation needs to be residents. Students and tourists also help, but there needs to be a...

It could be better, but most people won’t even notice. They’ll mainly notice the ground level, and it’s decent enough.

The missed bike lane was a major fail 🤦‍♂️

This is one of my favorite styles of multi-family housing. The other being townhome style. The only thing missing from this development is a cycle lane on that section of 5th street.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I agree on the definitions of progressive, but I don’t see why we need that for property tax. I don’t believe it should be based on the value of your land, but rather on your income, that way, the wealthy really are paying, not necessarily someone who bought a house in a neighborhood that’s...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I agree, it’s not fair that inner city people with higher home values should have to pay more when they’re doing a favor to the city by helping control sprawl.

It wouldn’t shift to a regressive side if we are taxing based on street frontage, etc, only shifting to a more fair tax. I don’t see anything even mildly progressive with the current market value system.

Anyone planning to travel to the US: Yay or Nay?

Not for another 4 years at least. There’s nothing interesting enough there for me to visit there while Trump is the president. Even before the election, we weren’t very interested in going to the US. Back in September we booked a spring trip to France, Spain and Portugal.

I think the mesh is OK, it’s a little cluttered, but it makes the building interesting at least. It could end up very cool looking at night depending on the lighting.

I agree, the CRUs should make a difference. I remember when Irvine in Inglewood was finished at had a lifeless feel until the CRUs were filled. Today it blends nicely into the avenue. Might only me, but I find when the CRUs are empty I notice the rest of the building (good or bad points) more.

    Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

I Didn’t realize there was an issue with height over the CP tracks. To me elevated seems like a no brainer if underground is too costly. Also, I’m sure there a solution for getting the height needed. Start the elevation earlier in the Beltline?

    Green Line LRT | ?m | ?s | Calgary Transit

I couldn’t agree more with Chinook arch. We don’t need to be building a go train for the people in Sage Hill. Building a line through Nose Creek Valley doesn’t serve anybody except for the people at the far end of the city.

    Statscan numbers

The gap will be much bigger now with Oliver, Nude and Park Central opening up in the past year. I would guess the Beltline’s population today is probably close to 30k.

Interestingly, when you look back at 1981, Edmonton and Ottawa were the metros that were growing, while Calgary, which was heavily tied to oil was struggling at that time. I remember all through the 80s my brother-in-law (who was from Edmonton) was constantly saying that Calgary was going to...

    Trees in Calgary

A quick, primitive number crunch shows if the city had started such a fund years 30 ago by adding as little as $2 million a year for the first 30 years and keeping all interest earnings for the first 20 years it could be as high as $100 million today. This year the fund would produce ~ $5-7...
