    Calgary Municipal Politics

I like the fact that the Calgary Party are positioning themselves as the centrist option, which is roughly where my leanings are. But Thiessen just doesn't seem to be getting any momentum, and the race seems to be morphing into Gondek vs. Farkas - the sequel. As for my local CP candidate...

    Calgary International Airport

Lots of 737's on order, but I'm most excited about those 7 Dreamliners...

    Plaza | 109m | 33s | Cantiro | GEC

The site has been cleared of the vehicles and seacan's that were sitting there. Looks like action should be starting very soon.

Calgary public disorder & safety thread.

Agreed, but it seems like the police focus very much on busting the larger scale operations. Not sure why that is, or if they are being directed not to bother with the smalltime dealers. I did a bit of research on federal penalties and there are minimum sentences that could get these people in...

Calgary public disorder & safety thread.

To be fair to the police, it's a very difficult issue to solve, and there is not a whole lot they can do. They can issue a citation, knowing that the perpetrator will not pay the fine or turn up in court. In most cases there isn't grounds for an arrest. If they force them out of one part of...

    1216 8th Street | 87m | 28s | Great West Life | Zeidler

The second is for a 28 storey tower in Beltline, GWL Realty is developer and Zeidler is architect. This building will not replace a parking lot, unfortunately, but it will replace a shitty little single storey retail building that looks to have been built in the '80s or 90s. It'll have 240...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

The first one is a 6 storey project at 101 25 AV SW in Mission, being called "Shorecrest", that will have 74 units. Architect is Manu Chugh and developer is "Mission River Capital Corp".

    JEMM 16th Ave | 25m | 6s | Jemm Properties | NORR

I'm optimistic, JEMM seems to use good quality materials and their buildings usually meet expectations. I would not call this building a "looker" by any means but I think it'll turn out ok.

    Library Square | 21m | 6s | Bankside | LOLA

I would love to see this one go ahead. Would be great to get some construction happening in that part of EV, it badly needs some positive momentum.

    Plaza | 109m | 33s | Cantiro | GEC

If you remember, Cantiro tapped into the office conversion fund (in this case, to fund demolition of the buildings that were on site) in exchange for affordable housing as part of the project. They also have a BP application in. All of this is to say that they've already sunk a lot of money...

    61st Ave Residential | 64m | 19s | Cadillac Fairview | Zeidler

Interesting! If they are applying for BP then this is almost certainly going ahead. Wondering if CF sees this as a way to get a few hundred new residents near Chinook Centre, since they own the mall I believe.

    Aspen Village | 25m | 6s | Vesta | Zeidler

That's more like the Springbank that I remember. If people are that opposed to living in a proper urban environment, I can't understand why they don't just sell their multi-million-dollar homes and buy an acreage in Sharp Hill or Bearspaw?

    Project 54 | 43m | 12s | Cidex Group | NORR

Agreed. Also, this is still a large project, as it will have 234 units. It's just that rather than a tower on a podium, it's a midrise that covers most of the site. It's probably just as dense as La Caille's tower across the street in terms of FAR, it's just in a different built form.

    Aspen Village | 25m | 6s | Vesta | Zeidler

There is some incredible density going up in Springbank Hill and West Springs. What is so remarkable about it to me is that for the longest time this part of the city hated seeing even row houses going up in their community, and now they're seeing among the densest greenfield development anywhere.

    Kit at Kensington | 50m | 15s | Jemm Properties | LOLA

I have been wondering the same thing. I am not aware of any plans whatsoever, but I agree the site would be ripe for redevelopment. It always seems busy so I am wondering if it's a victim of its own success (ie no perceived need to update the store), and once Kit and the other residential...

    Stampede Station | 277.3m | 71s | Truman | NORR

Certainly doesn't qualify as "high end" but more urban format retail in Beltline would be nice...would love a Costco.

    Nest | 40.23m | 15s | Cairo Development | Casola Koppe

I believe so, but not sure which of those are being offered in this case. Pretty sure they need to do one or more of those in order to be allowed the zero parking.

    Calgary Municipal Politics

Rezoning for housing is a bit of an "X factor" that could influence the race in Ward 7. Anecdotally, some of my older friends in the area (who typically lean progressive) are pissed about it, and want Gondek (and the other pro-rezoning people) gone. Some of those people might support Wong even...

    Calgary Municipal Politics

That would be Heather McRae, whose husband is Stephen Carter is running the overall Calgary party campaign I believe. I'm in W7 too and there are a few others who are campaigning but haven't registered yet. Myke Atkinson and Dave Barrett both have a fair amount of signs around.
