Beautiful shot. Taken from the Royal I take it? Love how you can see Faith47's Courgar Mural so clearly in the picture. PS- 8th street needs some street trees.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Not sticking to an ideal, just saying their are ramifications of decisions. Yes I am single and I live close to downtown. But I don't complain that my condo is too small (it's really damn small) or that it costs too much (the per square foot is much higher than in the burbs, by a significant...

You could choose to live in Ogden or Erin woods, or heck, even Douglasdale. Your commute would be shorter, and you could probably even bike or take transit to work. But you chose not to. Not saying that's a poor choice (there are many other factors that go into a housing location choice apart...

It just seems to me complaining about a choice someone made, full well knowing the consequences of that choice. "I chose to live in the suburbs, and I have to drive everywhere, but there is this traffic and it's frustrating." Guess what, if you choose to live in a place where you have to drive...

Again, you are using the most inefficient method of transportation in a scenario where 1000s of people are trying to leave a single place all at the same time. Guess, what, we can't move hundresds of cars through an intersection at every cycle. No matter what you do, you cannot move that many...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Nobody is saying that you are not allowed to drive. Nor are we denying your ability to do so. What we are saying is that prioritizing pedestrians and transit is better for everyone. Not everyone can take the train or walk, but by making it easier for many to do so, it means that less people have...

    Infill Development Discussion

If you drive along Kensington Road between 14th and 19th street there are a bunch on the north side. Also on 29th street SW between 23rd and 24th avenues on the west side. There are a bunch all over the inner city, but those are some local concentrations of them.

These are not slot homes. Slot homes have the "slot" facing the street, with the units facing that interior courtyard. Our projects are largely rowhouses, with each units front entrance facing the street.

Guess what? Cars are incredibly inefficient at moving a lot of people through a small space. At a MAXIMUM a vehicle lane can move like 2000 people per hour. And that is free-flow traffic. A train can move 20K-30K per hour. Pedestrians walking is about 10K/hr. It's almost as if trying to move a...

    Infill Development Discussion

Our bylaw kind of prevents this with requirements for every dwelling unit's front entrance to "face" a street (mostly in the M-CG district). There have been some weird interpretations of this, and a few products like the ones you see in Denver, but for the most part, we have avoided this...

And a kick ass mural to anchor it too. ;)

As far as I know, the staining is coming from the brick itself. With rain or other moisture moving through the brick, salts and other minerals get deposited on the exterior of the brick as the water evaporates. It lessens with time as the amount of salt and other minerals in the brick eventually...

Great posts CB and Dave. Cool to see how much of a baby boom is happening in the Centre City.

    General Construction Updates

We need literally 100s of these in the inner city and inner ring of this city.

Not really. Almost every new build includes parking with it. Now we have just an insane amount of capacity (parking, road space, etc).

If we have a 90,000 worker hole, and therefore a 90,000 commuter hole in the downtown, wouldn't this be a great time to convert some of that road space to bus lanes, bike lanes, extended sidewalks, etc? If we are not attracting workers, and need to attract residents, our perspective has to shift.

They might still paint it. I love painted white brick.

IIRC, the building is going to go through major renovations with the addition of the two condo buildings to the north. I think some tenants may be able to stay during the construction (ANJU perhaps?) but I think the amount of work happening on that side of the building might require them to...

Just to add my two cents to the "vibrancy" discussion. In my experience, cities that had vibrancy also had a very permissive and risk taking attitude towards things. London- wanna convert a gas station into a food market? Sure, go ahead. Wanna stack a bunch of shipping containers on top of...

    Calgary's Heritage Resources

Enoch is a huge loss. Beautiful building that had so much potential. A cool café or a community space would be amazing there. Just really sucks when such an important asset is lost because of neglect and lack of vision.
