    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I believe this below is the rendering for this one.

What I mean is that I don't wanna see three identical towers. Material, crown, or colour should be changed.

I hope the design is changed 🙏

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I'm considering our recent population trends which point to greater population growth for our CMA in comparison to Vancouver's. From Jan 2022 to Jan 2023, we've added an estimated 40.5K people versus 30.1k in Vancouver, above the age of 15...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

NGL I agree with you here. Calgary has had such a slow pace of development since 2014. Given the recent rental vacancy rate, massive immigration numbers, and the historically low-interest rate environment we've experienced, I'm really disappointed in the lack of big residential projects taking...

I hope we can get over the flashy renderings and realize the ground level looks like every other sterile corporate tower in Calgary.

With a future LRT station, I think 16 ave and centre area would be a great midtown spot. A mix of midrises and highrises.

    Park Central | 138m | 40s | Hines | S.C.B.

It would've been nice if they changed the color of the cladding at least. Another twin. I don't know if I feel happy about this one aesthetically. Even the first tower is well-designed structurally but the cladding could have been better for the tower section, IMO.

Calgary Centre for Child and Adolescent Mental Health | 16m | 3s | AHS | Sahuri + Partners

Do developers and investors sit there and say "Hey let's pick the ugliest design and material"? It's hard to imagine how designs like this can still happen.

    Sunalta Heights | 88.39m | 27s | Housing One | S2

Well, they can start by building the second tower for this right away! The rental vacancy is low and with inflation still historically high, I don't think we're getting lower interest rates any time soon, so makes no sense to me why they're waiting.

^Looking at that Seton rendering, once again there's an opportunity to design a proper TOD but this time with the help of a greenfield canvas. Instead, the city sticks an LRT station 2-3 blocks from the Main Street retail, between what looks to be Calgary's patented yellow grass and some parking...

Again? after 13 years? With a bigger area of study? LOL. Majority of the time, these plans are meaningless in Calgary.

    Kit at Kensington | 50m | 15s | Jemm Properties | LOLA

Agreed! There should be retail along 3rd ave and preferably 9a st, along the train station side. I don't know why we still can't make a proper TOD. Retail street activation along transit stations is one of the key pieces to unlocking vibrancy that comes with a TOD development. This is why TOD...

I really dislike the podium. 🤮

Let’s just hope there’s some human scale at the podium level. Last thing we need is an another shiny oversized tower with 0 pedestrian realm along the street.

    Calgary Municipal Politics

This is such a stupid proposal in its current form. I remember my first encounter with the ban on single use bags when it was first implemented out in Surrey this past year. I ordered a regular meal from McDonalds and said no to a bag for $0.25 at the Drive-Thru. When I pulled up to the pickup...

    Enzo | 27m | 6s | Arlington Street | DAAS

Firstly, that affordable housing conversion visually seems like a building that was already aged and well past its prime to serve as a hotel. Although the pictures of the interior don’t seem too bad, personally, as a traveller, I’m looking for a hotel with up to date amenities and furnishing...

    Enzo | 27m | 6s | Arlington Street | DAAS

That's a nice option, but for me as a tourist visiting a new city, I prefer a hotel and I'm sure plenty of tourists have the same preference. Hotels are convenient, a lot less stressful, and come with many of perks. Given the location, I'm sure it would've done tremendous business.

    Enzo | 27m | 6s | Arlington Street | DAAS

I really wanted this to be a hotel. It's unfortunate that 17th ave still doesn't have a hotel, considering it's one of Calgary's most prominent street. This location would've been perfect for it.

    West Tenth 1400 | 24m | 7s | Trimount

Good! Less imposing. An 11 storey block-long development can be really bad for street vibrancy. Just take a look at The Metropolitan.
