    Water-cooler discussion thread

I guess this is the thread to put something as frivolous as this. https://globalnews.ca/news/9122726/canada-national-holiday-sept-19-queens-funeral/ A quote from our PM ..."Declaring an opportunity for Canadians to mourn on Monday is important,” Yes, we all knew the queen personally and we...

    Calgary City Centre West Tower | 132.28m | 32s | Cadillac Fairview | Zeidler

There must be some reason why we are not seeing the building of purpose-rental in Eau Claire. GWL Realty/Quadreal have not moved forward with their large project which included 4 rental towers and a hotel, just a couple blocks to the west of this site.

So this builder is going through a broker to find buyers too. That makes half a dozen or so builders that are going that route. I don't know. If I am an out-of-town investor how do I make sure my investment is being looked after? I am not in Calgary to manage the rental process of my unit or...

    Stephen Avenue Quarter | 241m | 66s | Triovest | Gibbs Gage

It was not in scope. The writer may have meant the Molson Bank building which is where the James Joyce is.

    Scotia Place | 36.85m | 11s | CSEC | HOK

I thought there was a disagreement over how cost overruns would be shared. Did this not become apparent after the first round of estimating? I know the project went out for preliminary tender just before CSEC and the city parted ways.

I took a good look at this from all 4 sides on the weekend. It did not look to me like there were any recent signs of actual work or activity. There is lot of unfinished work and not just the exterior materials. I'm guessing they ran into financial problems ... maybe there is a lien on the project.

    Weather and Gardening Discussion

Though it may not be in most people's memories (or before their time), we have experienced these kinds of temperatures before. For sure, those summers were outliers at the time and not a sign of global warming. This year makes two summers in a row that we have seen above average temperatures...

    Water-cooler discussion thread

Outside of rural Alberta, is there really any support for separation? I mean, it is a talking point for 'flexing muscles' and getting attention but such action is not based in reality. Real separation (and the Fed and rest of the provinces would make sure it is real) would create far more...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

The DP application for United Place conversion was filed. 81 residential units + child care + restaurant with outdoor patio. Oddly, the address it is under (395 7 St SW) is different than what is current for that building...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

The loss would have been single family homes and perhaps some older tenements. They occupied future space for commercial development which was all the rage back in the 70's & 80's. Unfortunately, mixed use development was not a thing 40-50 years ago when the downtown building boom was on. If it...

    Gallery First & Tenth | 60m | 19s | Truman

As was illustrated in an earlier photoshop, nothing on the outside of this building resembles the original block. It has been painted over to the point where it is an eyesore to me, every time I walk past. Whether there are other empty lots in the vicinity is immaterial. Truman purchased this...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

I am beginning to think there will be no more new office towers in downtown Calgary .... ever!

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

To be fair to Mr. White, I remember reading a series of columns he wrote some years back where we was comparing successful inner city rejuvenations to that of Calgary. The city of Portland comes to mind. Unfortunately, the inner city of Portland has now been overrun with homeless which has...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

An agreement to buy hydrogen in unknown quantities at an unknown price is not a purchase agreement, in my mind. Governments change in time and there is nothing holding Germany to this agreement if they find other sources of energy in the short to medium term. If some country wanted to sell...

    11th + 11th | 138.07m | 44s | Intergulf | Ramsay Worden

The stolen van was going eastbound on 10 Ave at a high rate of speed and turned right at the corner sharply on 11 St. The driver lost control on 11 St and swerved into the back of the store. It was miraculous that there were no cars in the northbound lane or pedestrians on the sidewalk at that...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/possibly-one-of-the-greatest-missed-opportunities-in-canadian-history Yep ... our PM, who has no common business sense whatsoever, actually said that he did not see a business case for LNG on the east coast. This was stated at a news conference with the...

    The Hat Elbow River | 177.99m | 56s | Cidex Group | NORR

I am guessing they mean 2030 completion and like West Village it will probably be done in phases. Upon approval, a likely start would be late 2023 or early 2024
