    Crazy dream ideas for Calgary

If Venice (LA) can do it, why not!

I'm a big fan of how it is now, but I imagine one day you might be able to take a time-stamped photo or video on your phone, and automatically it could add to the project on the map page without the user needing to manually direct it as such because the location data is shared. I guess what I...

    Who are you?

I'm 30. Born in Ottawa, moved to Calgary as a toddler and grew up there, went to university at Queens, came home summers, traveled a lot and moved home to Calgary after graduation, did a couple more degrees at UofC, worked or lived in every quadrant, avid cyclist and transit user since high...

    Crazy dream ideas for Calgary

How about sprucing up part of the western irrigation canal one day?

I like the forum as is, but I can imagine how it will probably evolve as technology and applications advance: - even easier camera-to-website posting - some kind of encouragement and auto sorting photos - more video and audio media - even better, more transparent media from c.c. minutes - better...

Really? Where am I looking? That would be awesome.

There will definitely be more foot traffic through and around city hall. Hopefully those trees on 3rd are promptly replaced and we'll probably see other improvements over time. I'd like to see some more exterior at grade retail near 9th ave and 3rd st SE.

Halifax's new library uses part of the roof as a reading/cafe space. In general, I think every flat roof that isn't used for something is a waste of floorspace. Even just occasional special events on there would be incredible.

I see more glass panels waiting to be installed!

I've always thought Calgary should transplant some alpine flowers and shrubs from the mountains to office tower roofs. Those plants grow great at elevation with almost no soil, extreme winds, and they are (fairly) local.

19th st nw is a great little street.

    General Construction Updates

I'm not sure exactly what you mean. Would Calgary have been a better city if UofC and MRU were built downtown in the 60s? Yes, I think so. What can we do about it now? I think young people want to be where the other young people are. For me, the music and cultural festivals that run almost...

They should basically cut it out at grade with 8th ave, put studio and living space above, make a new entrance to SAIT directly on Riley Park, and add a 10th St crossing at 8th Ave. There's another developer that wants to build a condo tower/old age home on 8th Ave NW. Maybe they should partner.

That SAIT Parkside spot will be s missed opportunity if they don't (a) take full advantage of the awesome view, (b) encourage more pedestrian travel between SAIT and Kensington/Riley Park, and (c) create something with character. I recommend a cross between Cobh's Deck of Cards, SF's Lombard...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Good comment. To me, Sunnyside is the perfect neighbourhood: seamlessly integrated rapid transit, a variety of housing choices for a variety of income earners, plenty of green and natural space, nearby work spaces that can accommodate nearly any industry. It's not so crowded that the sidewalks...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

@CBBarnett well said. Stats can never entirely capture the quality of a city. Many of the most interesting cities I've visited have been smaller but we'll connected to their region; or acutely aware of their history; or bare a special relationship to their geography and climate; or exist with...
