    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

I don't know the exact address, but it seems the main challenge is providing 4 driveways (and up to 4 conflicts) while maintaining the walkable, treed character of the street. Too bad there's no alley access for parking. Anyway, overall I like the simple design (3 material elements, clean...

They put the glass on the most visible parts so I think it will look great.

There are so many ways this could be better. I'm ready for a few of the fads here to die.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Homelessness and drugs will continue to be social problems in Calgary (and everywhere), but I think one of the surest ways to make the area feel more safe is to attract more "regular" people. Compare the park at 17th ave and 8th st sw to how it felt 10 years ago. But yes, the more well lit and...

    Calgary Transit

I guess it depends on how you believe transit should be funded. It's my opinion, given certain criteria (strong cost management, focusing on minimum accessibility, focus on reducing cost/rider, tending always to automation over union work, etc) it is fair for property taxes (and possibly other...

    Calgary Stadiums and Arenas

How about a mandatory but discounted fee for transit on all tickets? The city can say they offered x million, when in fact it's a lot cheaper to provide transit per passenger to events like hockey games. Meanwhile, nobody drinks and drives, nobody dodges fares, everybody's encouraged to ride...

    Calgary Stadiums and Arenas

In my opinion it's worth paying the property tax even for other people to ride transit. Maybe they'll even realize commuting by transit is something they could do. I'm not comfortable buying the owners a stadium, but free transit to games on busses and trains that are going to run anyway (though...

    Calgary Stadiums and Arenas

Free transit with the purchase of an event ticket? Sounds like a great idea - the kind of city investment in a stadium that I can support. Thoughts? https://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/alberta/calgary-reveals-offer-to-the-flames-for-a-new-555-million-arena/article36276378/

They should make it like the tunnel through the Rijksmuseum.

Political, but compelling. I had never really blamed Chu for this (just other things) but he certainly didn't help. http://www.ward4record.ca/how_sean_chu_lost_the_green_line

Those trees look great. The more trees downtown the better. I almost think we should start reporting tree population with human population.

    Crazy dream ideas for Calgary

I always thought it would be cool if a university deliberately built architecture of different eras and cultures (at least on facades) to teach students about design and history.

    Crazy dream ideas for Calgary

This might be far fetched but I think it could work: what about getting volunteers to do the majority of the Labour for something like this? I mean, I don't know how much it would reduce costs, but it would be a cool experiment in social constructivism. I think a lot of people in our generation...

    General Construction Updates

This is the case on so many roads. Whenever there isn't really room for that second land (with parking), it should be converted to 1 lane + parking + wide sidewalk or bike lane. This also applies to many-lane roads with a "parking lane". Parked cars need only about 60-70% the space of moving cars.

I love that they kept those trees alive during construction. They've had a major head start with lots of light, and the new tenant can enjoy walking into their building from day 1.

This is probably the right time to post this: You can even see the c-train and Calgary Tower in the background. His flight path is pretty well right into the library.

When will the Beltline take over as Calgary's most populous neighbourhood?

The main difference is the presence of children. You can fit a bunch of those things in a house.
