  1. Chinook Arch

    First & Park | 75m | 18s | Graywood

I can imagine the architect talking to the developer.

    The Forge | 16.5m | 6s | Kanas | Gibbs Gage

The black material looks kind of cheap, but once it’s cleaned up it should look better. The brick and the corrugated aluminum look great though.

    The Hive | 27m | 9s | Jemm Properties | LOLA

This is turning out better than I thought it would.
  4. Chinook Arch

    Flyover Block | 20m | 6s | RNDSQR | FAAS Architecture

I agree 100% about not caring about the aesthetics of this building, what I don’t get is the hate on for someone driving a car. Was it necessary to label drivers as losers and douches to make your point? I drive over the flyover 2-3 times a week, so does that make me a loser, or the equivalent...

    Form vs Function?

I thought I would start a thread to discuss form versus function. Reading through the threads in the buildings section it seems that there are two camps here at Skyrise, one camp who wants architectural, beauty, and another camp who wants function. Ultimately it would be nice to have both but it...

    Trail 31 | 13m | 3s | Eagle Crest | FAAS Architecture

50 units is a lot for that size if parcel, a few more developments like this in intercity neighbourhoods and you can add a lot of people in a short time.
  7. Chinook Arch

    Munro | 26m | 7s | Calgary Co-op | NORR

With this being backed by Royop, I have at least some confidence it’ll start up again, unlike the the one across the street, seemingly run by amateurs.

    Wing Kei Village | 26m | 6s | Wing Kei | S2

I saw that too a while back and was going to ask about it. Looks like decent infill, it’s too bad it wasn’t more regular living units but still.
  9. Chinook Arch

    Riverside Village | 86m | 27s | CNIB | S2

How friggin annoying. With all the pressure to get new hosing in the city, hopefully the city doesn’t pay much attention to these people. 27 story towers, perfectly fine and that location.

    The Hat Elbow River | 177.99m | 56s | Cidex Group | NORR

Edmonton has the tallest building, but for overall height in general its butt is kicked. One tall building doesn’t really count. The point is moot though. Nobody cares about height in 2024.

    Calgary International Airport

Question for the avgeeks. I’m in the international terminal ‘D’ and I see a flight Halifax. I thought the international term was only international flights?
  12. Chinook Arch

    Flyover Block | 20m | 6s | RNDSQR | FAAS Architecture

It looks 100 times more interesting than the plastic siding. It would be nice if they painted the bars either black or white, but the plain steel colour might look really cool when reflecting sunlight.

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

Agreed. I agree with almost all of what he posts, but some of the posts are extreme in nature. Hyperbole works when joking around but has the opposite effect if it’s meant to be taken seriously.
  14. Chinook Arch

    Sovereign | 40.54m | 14s | Avi Urban | GEC

I thought sovereign would be one of the next ones to get built but, with prices like that, Sovereign won’t be built anytime soon
  15. Chinook Arch

    First & Park | 75m | 18s | Graywood

What is the global standard these days? I spent three weeks in Europe travelling different cities and none of the apartment buildings I saw u/c looked any better tbh. The newer low rise buildings were the same as what I’m seeing here.
  16. Chinook Arch

    Village Block | 27m | 6s | Liberty Housing | Metafor

    Love this proposal.
  17. Chinook Arch

    Lincoln | 120m | 37s | Truman | NORR

Nice to see a 35 storey tower proposed instead of the 9 storey one. It’s not that I love high rise towers to making up our urban environment, but this is the area where high rise towers work well.

    Roads, Highways & Infrastructure

I don’t disagree that people who walk or cycle to work are happier and healthier. Those studies are kind of pointless though, especially for North American cities. There’s no study that shows the effects if the 90% of the people who drive or take transit to work, suddenly had to walk or cycle...
  19. Chinook Arch

    555 Bishop Drive | 20m | 5s | Anthem | Integra Architecture

This looks good. It’s solid and definitely not offensive.
