    Calgary Regional Rail Transit

I am all for this - I think it’s a great investment in the future of our region even if the province needs to kick in a couple billion (aka 30 days of $110/bbl o&g royalties or what we wasted on KXL) to make it happen. Having said that, I think this project will require - at a minimum - 9...

    Calgary Regional Rail Transit

They have an MOU with CP. That is not a “secured agreement”. My guess is it says something like “we will work together to study this proposal”. When they inevitably determine that it’s not cost effective or practical to double track every km of the proposal, then the cost negotiations start.

I have to say, they have an impressive amount of stakeholder engagement. What I don’t see yet is a clear vision for the engineering design in the tight sections of the corridor (eg around Edworthy), how much this will impact CP operations, and what price CP will charge for that impact. Rail from...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

The main consumers of the list (the ones who actually pay for the full data set) are HR departments of large corporations that are relocating people internationally and need some independent benchmark of how nice or crappy a particular posting will be. So, the list is pretty much meant to...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

My initial reaction is that they want to offer more nonstops from Calgary on less competitive US and Canadian routes, where they will likely be the only carrier flying the route. Think Calgary-Boston, Calgary-Charlottetown, Calgary-Nashville. They probably want to pull back on competing with Air...

    Alberta Provincial Politics

If only they could find a Calgary-based leader with a long history of social conservatism, but also a strong appeal to big business … someone who could talk to CEOs, but also knew how to use the props of rural life to connect with small town conservatives … oh, and someone with a long track...

    Alberta Provincial Politics

I don’t see the UCP literally splitting (not clear how that would work practically, there’s no divorce law for political parties). But I expect there will be two conservative parties with some current UCP MLAs in both camps at the next election. Either UCP goes hard right and the Alberta Party...

    Alberta Provincial Politics

Prediction: whoever forms the next government is going to be elected on a platform of a whole bunch of spending goodies. Hard to see how you win an hotly contested election in the context of a massive budget surplus without that.

    Alberta Provincial Politics

It could well happen … next move after that, Brian Jean leads a right-wing group out of the UCP caucus to reconstitute Wild Rose. That would likely force a snap election with Kenney competing for rural seats with Wild Rose, while also trying to replace centrist dissidents like Leela Aheer with...

Council could vote down the proposal and tell the developer they would approve it if the office use was removed/shrunk, which is sort of similar.

The inclusion of a 24 story office tower makes me skeptical that this is actually about building something this decade. Seems more likely this is the first move in a rezone and flip plan?

It worked in Denver, in a very similar neighborhood. Kicked off the Lohi gentrification boom.

“The Board finds that the proposed development is overbuilt in relation to the parcel size. This is demonstrated by the parking relaxation, the building being over height, the developer maximizing FAR so that amenity space is concentrated to a common area on the rooftop, the window intensity...

    Infill Development Discussion

SDAB policy says: “Affected person” is not defined in the Municipal Government Act. The Board determines affected persons on a case-by-case basis. For example, an affected person could be someone who feels the enjoyment, use or value of their property may be affected by the proposed...

    Infill Development Discussion

You need to be an affected person (ie lease or own property nearby) to have standing at SDAB. Anyone can write a letter for consideration at the land use or development permit stage.
