    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

MNP is highly accessible and arguably the best rec centre in Canada.

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

The terrain looks good. Some of it looks to be southern and southwesterly exposure, so snow retention may be questionable

The commercial real estate collapse hit Calgary well before other cities. The recent surge in transaction is likely a sign that valuations have bottomed out. Other cities have yet to test the bottom.

    Trees in Calgary

...or plant fewer trees and actually maintain them. Planting also often seems to ignore that trees planted after about June struggle to survive and those in exposed areas like west or south facing slopes almost always die.

    Beltline Block | 118m | 36s | ONE Properties | Gibbs Gage

The foundation might be oversized as the TA bunker was originally intended for phased vertical expansion.

So are the first two towers being built on the existing foundation? At least one of the renderings looked to have a tower where the architecture office currently stands. That placement would suggest a new foundation for it. One would think the developer would reuse the existing foundation before...

    General Construction Updates

Eau Claire Market did far better before the growth in the surrounding residential population. It failed for many reasons.

    Beltline Block | 118m | 36s | ONE Properties | Gibbs Gage

I am confused about this project. At one point, the plan was to demolish the TA building while preserving the foundation so that a tower could be built on it. Now it appears that both the TA and architecture firm buildings are coming down for 2 towers, but potentially 4 total at some point in...

    Trees in Calgary

Seedlings are cheap and almost always die in Calgary's climate.

I'd like to get excited about this, but I know getting anything built in Canada is near impossible: https://calgaryherald.com/news/politics/alberta-open-crown-land-all-season-resort-development-tourism

Yeah. This is a plan for 750,000 dead trees

    US Politics

Canada is no longer in charge of its destiny as it will do whatever it takes to maintain a US trade agreement. This should be viewed as an opportunity to move away from at least some of supply management and protection of the telecom, media, commercial air travel and financial services industries.

    Crane Count

I heard that a crane is being installed at Nest. Also heard that shoring is complete on 4th tower at deVille Quarry Park with excavation starting right away. Target is to have crane up by February

    US Politics

Sure it is. Trump is transactional. He will want something like an end to supply managment and 2% defence spending and the Canadian government will give it to him.

Most of the big producers have already signaled production increases without new pipeline capacity: https://www.reuters.com/business/energy/canadian-oil-producer-cenovus-boost-production-19-five-years-2024-03-05/#:~:text=Cenovus%20said%20it%20plans%20to,Sign%20up%20here...

The oil could be there in short order. Lots of SAGD plants can add new pads in 1.5 - 3 years

    US Politics

Canada will do whatever it takes to be inside the US tariff wall. It doesn't have much choice.

    US Politics

Trump could make inflation worse if he doesn't take action on the deficit. I doubt Harris would be much different.
  20. DougB

    US Politics

Trump's victory might unexpectedly be an opportunity for Canada. Trump will renegotiate trade agreements again and probably force Canada to give on at least some of supply management and protection of telecom, media commercial air travel and financial services.
