    Water-cooler discussion thread

I live pretty close to the Cowboys Park. It's audible at night. But honestly with the windows closed, it's not that loud. And again, it's 10 days. If we bring it to the suburbs, people are going to complain of the car honking and taxi/uber traffic at 2am.

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

It's an affordable housing proposal on school lands with units reserved for staff. Great idea and probably needed in places that Canmore that have a large influx of out of town buyers...

    Calgary Regional Rail Transit

I hope they get a proposal out before this nationalist pride fades. Especially with the talk of Western alienation, and Quebec-Windsor high-speed rail going ahead, I'm sure the Feds would love a twin announcement of High Speed/High Frequency rail on the East and West.

    Calgary 2019 Civic Census

I think what is most likely is the inner city ring, and it's built form - main street with shops/restaurants/services, mid-rise apartments at intersections, infills throughout will gradually expand from Hillhurst to Capitol hill, from Bridgeland to Renfrew and so on. It's already happening to a...

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

Maybe it's my social circle, but I've never once heard anyone complain about bike lanes in Calgary. Going to any major cities downtown and streets like 17th will have wide curb cuts, bike lanes, and single lane of traffic. We just re-did the road without adding any of these. We've done the thing...

    Calgary 2019 Civic Census

I think looking at pure population figures are missing the broader population trends. Canada's population 100 years ago is about 9 million, we're now at 41. If we grew at the same rate, in 2125 we're supposed to be at 187 million. That's 1.45 million per year. Even during the Covid recovery...

    Calgary 2019 Civic Census

For our population size, we're actually lucky that our downtown is so large, due to the influx of head offices. Without that, Calgary would look much more like Edmonton and Ottawa than it does now. Our downtown areas (like the West End, East Village, Central Memorial Park) are able to be...

    Stampede Station | 277.3m | 70s | Truman | NORR

Should we update the title of this thread and the other Stampede hotel thread, now that the property names are confirmed?

It's an interesting model. They're taking on a lot of risk by bringing many of the contractors in house. Makes it cheaper to build and easy to move from one to the next, but if there's a downturn, that's a lot of expenses to be carrying.

It seems odd to me that they think there's so much demand. I assume most of it isn't from the neighbourhood directly, but Crowchild and 14th traffic? But there's closer stores at both those locations.

    Calgary International Airport

A few of these are once per week, they're probably testing to see which performs best and will increase frequency while cancelling some.

    Calgary International Airport

Westjet is plane-constrained, and we didn't get many foreign airlines that increased capacity, Discover just moved a Frankfurt flight to Munich. Without the international increase, unless Canadians are travelling less internationally, there wouldn't be more transit passengers this year compared...

I'd just leave the hotel demand/supply up to the industry. If Marriott wants to open 3 more hotels when they already have 6/7 in the downtown, then I'd trust they see the demand, it's their money and their partnerships after all. And these towers are huge, but the hotels proposed have pretty...

    Stampede Station | 277.3m | 70s | Truman | NORR

Not to mention many of the hotels in the city are already Marriotts. Downtown alone, there's Westin, Elements, Autograph/Courtyard, Delta, Marriott, Residence Inn, Sheraton, and Fairfield Inn. I'm sure Marriott isn't investing in more hotel capacity if they don't see the demand with their...

Calgary Bike Lanes and Bike Paths

We’re not putting bike lanes on Stoney or Deerfoot. If the province thinks inner city roads are part of provincial corridors, please kindly pay for their maintenance. It’s really quite sad we used the be the conservative voice of Canada, and now we’re trying to fake outrage because Doug Ford...

How many more sites can Truman own/build?! 🤣

Took some photos today, Metro and Club Pilates already have their sign up. Crave has a construction sign, and FreshCo confirmed with the down arrow in the windows. The FreshCo looks pretty small, but that middle space goes deeper than the side retail spaces.

Dorian is an Autograph, but its location isn't great for BMO Centre/Scotia Place. Residence Inn is a long stay hotel (full kitchen, many suites), and is a slightly different target market than these ones. The Calgary downtown one is in a nice building, but most of them are like the one by the...

    Stampede Station | 277.3m | 70s | Truman | NORR

Very unclear which U/C project the 4500 includes. I do think we need some higher end hotels. The main hotel brands (Hyatt Regency/Marriott/Delta) are all pretty dated. And the new ones are mostly a tier below (Hilton Garden Inn, Hampton Inn, etc.). The buildings are huge, but the room count is...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

The problems I see with 1, is that they'd need design/consultation. Very hard to do detailed design then wait until some emergency to do the work since the design may no longer work. And 2, I think cost is probably the main reason. If it came out that they're ripping up a street they did 2...
