    Stampede Hotel | 45m | 12s | Truman | NORR

Wouldn't be surprised if the Stampede Station site had a more upscale business hotel (JW, Conrad or Grand Hyatt), while the currently announced hotel is more a boutique brand.

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

We are stuck in sort of stuck with our healthcare system. There's an allergic reaction to any sort of privatization, even though countries like Germany, Switzerland, etc. run public-private systems. A public only system fails to collect additional funds from wealthy people that are willing to...

    Calgary & Alberta Economy

It's hilarious to me one of the selling points of the independence vote is you get to keep your Canadian passport. Have these people been to other countries? Which countries share a passport? Or do they want an arrangement like Puerto Rico? Guam? French Polynesia? Maybe ask anyone living there...

    Statscan numbers

The new bill changes refugee rules significantly, which will likely lead to decrease in TFW claims (must start claim within 14 days, many "students" are now claiming refugee status to try to remain), or US-origin claims (loophole in safe third country). Subject to legal challenge of course, but...

    Stampede Hotel | 45m | 12s | Truman | NORR

We do have a Regency already, that's basically equivalent to a standard Marriott. This location and it being smaller, more boutique vibe seems good for a W (Marriott), JdV (Hyatt) or Kimpton (IHG). One step off from the most premium brand (Ritz, St. Regis, Park Hyatt, etc.)

    Stampede Hotel | 45m | 12s | Truman | NORR

The hotel only goes up to 22nd floor. Most highrise hotels are like that, pretty sure Residence Inn in the Beltline is the same.

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

This is a myth of US health care. For people that have decent jobs with good insurance, the US system has a lot of advanced therapies and very well equipped facilities. They spend more but to argue Everyone gets less is false. Some people get less, some get more, it's just a much more unequal...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

But what's the cost of avoiding downtown? Are they simply spending money elsewhere? There's also an argument if people really are avoiding downtown. Beltline has had a huge increase in residents, Vancouver downtown real estate is incredibly expensive despite the drug problem. I'm not denying...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

I don't really think that is true. They incur costs when they access the healthcare system, and maybe utilize some public safety services. Realistically, a 24/7 healthcare facility to hold these people would be incredibly expensive, and each individual will likely live longer. If it was so cheap...

    Calgary International Airport

Sounds like Concourse B will be out a bit longer, but they're essentially rebuilding it. With the single security and the concourse B work, the domestic terminal is going to look quite different and feel more like a Westjet hub come 2026/2027.

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

And if it is tied to solving the problem, I think people will pay for it. Too often these promises of higher taxes to "solve" these issues but the issue doesn't improve and the additional taxes collected simply become the new baseline. That's why when people say increase housing density will...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

When you say re-offending, does that include simply using drugs? I agree for violent offences, they should be held without bail. If for simply using drugs, that's not possible unless we spend an ungodly amount of money. It's not just judges, you'd need more court rooms, prosecutors, support...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

I support forced treatment, but what is the wait for a spot? We can't reasonably hold someone without bail for multiple years for basic drug offences while waiting for treatment spaces. The population that is so far gone, will reduce gradually from treatment, their own drug use, and our weather...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

Chumir also has a responsibility for the safety of staff and other patients. Security guards in Canada are mostly a symbolic position, if they allowed open access from multiple entrances, that'd be a security nightmare. Assault on healthcare workers is a growing problem and I have no issues with...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

Don't disagree the problem is bad, but it's still not at Vancouver levels. One difference is that Vancouver has specific areas that are really bad, whereas the issue here is more spread out which makes it more visible. They are building treatment centres, otherwise, I'm not sure what the...

    Stampede Hotel | 45m | 12s | Truman | NORR

Not to mention Residence Inn rooms are much bigger with kitchens requiring much more utilities work. The 330M is definitely the "value" not the cost.

    Imperia | 95.3m | 27s | Truman | NORR

If they're willing, I'm sure we can have a thread showcasing their work!

    Crown Surplus | 20.36m | 6s | KN

Can't speak to the quality of his builds, but anyone familiar with his sh*t in Toronto, knows you don't want him near your city... Maybe he's just a lucky developer, that the heritage buildings standing on his site seem to mysteriously burn down to make way for his highrise towers.. 2022...

    Calgary's Downtown Dilemma

At a certain point, giving the people option to go into treatment was viable, as many drug users were still functional and able to hold basic jobs. But as others have mentioned, the drugs now are so strong, we cannot reasonably expect these people still have the capacity to make informed...

    Arts Commons | 18m | 4s | City of Calgary | KPMB

Also hail is rarely as bad in the centre of the city. And they definitely design for hail. When the last storm that took out terminal B at YYC, the much newer international terminal had no issues.
