No argument here, but we've backed ourselves into a bit more of a corner with the parkade (demolition cost for redevelopment), and this lot almost certainly has more revenue per sq meter than any other P&R, so it should be near the bottom of the list for TOD. Sirocco lot would be a good one...

The business case would be interesting here - I wonder how many new customers it would actually generate, or how many park and riders would become just riders? There's about 670 free P&R stalls on the west, with another 570 reserved stalls. A reserved stall can currently generate $1080 per year...

That Rex/Group 2 design is interesting...and terrifying! Does anyone know of any real life stacked clusters with that scale of overhang? I found some good examples here: https://www.amusingplanet.com/2016/01/buildings-that-look-like-stacked-boxes.html - but nothing looks quite as ambitious

When was this? 2017? 2019? 2020? 2021? 2022? 2024? There was an announcement that construction was ready to "start soon" each of those years

Are we sure that two contracts wouldn't have worked out even worse? Maybe some more smarter people can elucidate the process, but would it have been something like: South procurement more/less successful; DT procurement fails. So they have to find a lot more money, trim the DT wherever...

Probably some unprecedented vote combinations on these motions. Unfortunately the most progressive councillors are coming out guns blazing here with a lot of ironic hyperbole: https://livewirecalgary.com/2025/01/28/calgary-approves-and-carries-all-the-risk-on-new-green-line-alignment/

Actually looks like they are out and voting. Looks like a green light passed 8-6, but I just caught the vote and didnt get to read the motions closely

Not sure where best to put this, but an interesting situation in Durham around a possible aerial cable car instead of BRT As of Dec 11 2024 they had prices pegged at: An interesting point about BRT making traffic worse, but they anticipate ACCT generating more revenue than BRT. I haven't...

I've ruminated on this a bit before and have a lot of thoughts, but I'll try to keep it to a few brief points: It's totally fine - if not ideal - for families to live in low density housing with lots of green space/etc. (this is all from a bit of a privileged lens, but I think it can still...

There may be truth to this in some cases, but not this one. Let's remember what we're talking about: expensive tower units. Nobody is paying a huge premium to live in one of these with school age children. But there are a bunch of nearby SFH developments that are going to contribute to school...

Well one would have to unpack the numbers, but I suspect at a certain level of density there is an inverse relationship between density and school enrolment. So high density should go where schools are already full, because adding more low density is actually more likely to exacerbate that problem.

I'm also curious if you could elaborate. Maybe one idea would be building towers where very few school aged children will live?

Can anyone summarize the legal liability issue with Harvard? How big could the ultimate cost really be? Could the just city expropriate and move on (though I'm sure there are many downsides to this)? Or tinfoil hat: is the city worried about certain details that would come out in the discovery...

New towers probably have lower impact to school enrolment than any other form. If crowded schools are their concern they should be fighting against SFHs (or voting and advocating provincially in this interest) And within 1400 meters of this site there is: K-9 Catholic K-6 Public 7-9 Public...

I have no point here, but just down the road from Odyssey Towers are some awesome A-Frame row houses! This finally reminded me to look up an old listing...they actually seem better inside than I thought. The chalet vibe would have made a lot of sense until ~Y2K when this was essentially the...

A few more cars might make it tough to rip down OBCR at 80kph without a care in the world for pedestrians. What a travesty.

Did we know this already? [Redacted] funding already allocated and 'early work' has started? Given the redacted figure, I'm thinking this hasn't actually been announced?

There just doesn't seem to be much smoke from that camp lately...kinda like they gave up a few years ago? But I may be off on that? Seems like a lot more smoke around the regional rail stuff. From the FOIP, it seems Dreeshen had a "desired alignment of the GL" by mid July. The question is...

Very cool of LWC to include the full 125 FOIP documents for download. This article seems to focus mostly on late August, but the FOIP seems to include a bunch of emails from July and earlier - before the city amputated the line. Might be some interesting stuff in there. From the Jan 18...
