Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

Sorry if this was already talked about, but does anything know if there is something happening at the old Mill St Brewhouse pub building? It looks like someone is installing some nightclub style nights on the east side (inside) and I have seen people actively working inside as well.

There was a Land Use or DP for it, but I think it was either withdrawn or refused. I think it was for sale so maybe someone bought it and didn't need to do a Land Use in order to do whatever they want to do with it. They do seem to have an active building permit for interior alterations.

Maybe this can get it's own thread, but with the previous discussion on McMahon, the University has officially commented on the Dino Stadium proposal and that they'd go out for an RFP. Not sure who pays to maintain McMahon now, but I'd think the University would prefer a more right-sized facility that can host more sports teams beyond football, and is located closer the the Kin complex/field area.

I think the university would prefer whatever costs them the least amount of money on a life cycle basis. As soon as McMahon gets too expensive, the university wants to be in a position where it can walk away, and if partners want to keep it going, partners can pay.

I'd say we were here (McMahon costs the University too much and doesn't serve the University well) yesterday, last year, I'd even say in the 2010s maybe even the 2000s when Toronto, Hamilton, Winnipeg and Regina were looking at building new stadiums.

Is there public documents on how much it costs them? I assume it's a big mix. Like any upgrade related to the Grey cup is paid by Stamps/CFL/Gov, and CSEC pay to use the space for games, etc. so the direct cost to the University is a bit hard to determine, since there's a revenue side as well.

If it didn't make sense financially, they would've built their own thing years ago. They are doing an RFP so they can see the capital injection to build their own stadium and operate it, compared the the operation/capital cost of owning McMahon.

The university did explore developing the parking lot lands of McMahon stadium years ago. Believe they dubbed it as 'University Village'. Figure they would prefer to better utilize the land by making it another University District for them, rather than keeping a decrepit and underutilized stadium taking up so much space.

IIRC, when Calgary Next died, University Innovation Quarter was prioritized over any work on University Village. Also the city kept showing needing to acquire more university land for work on Crowchild, so it was important to set that in stone too.

Radical idea... Close University Ave access from Crowchikd, eliminate the ramps between 16th and University, build interchange at 24th and Crowchikd, convert University to a narrow local road and redevelop the entire site.
I’m very much a visual guy and I can’t quite picture this in my mind.
