I took some screenshots of the drone footage on this CTV report on Monday: https://www.ctvnews.ca/calgary/video/2026/03/03/nhl-commissioner-to-visit-calgary/

Is it just me or does there already appear to be a roof truss assembled and ready to be raised into place?

Why join with Edmonton? We could use the Saddledome and have a final send off for the old barn. Saddledome could host the lesser games and the new place would have all the Canada and playoff games.
Exactly my thought. Edmonton has had enough events with the bubble games and WJHC. Let Calgary have the spotlight!

They don't even need a joint partner or 2nd arena. Calgary would be only hosting 4 of the 8 teams. The other 4 are going to be hosted in Europe. 4 teams in this pool means 6 pool games. And if Calgary hosts the semi-finals and finals too. That is only 9 games in the 12 days it is scheduled.

Maybe they're trying to get the whole thing in Alberta, interesting no other candidate cities have come out. Frank teased having a little more information on 960 yesterday but wasn't solid enough to report it.

The province is pitching in $15M for the bid, so they probably need it to be an Alberta bid rather than a Calgary bid. Since Rogers place was built they haven't gotten any big NHL events like an all-star or draft, so it's probably to throw EDM ownership a bone. The bubble was fine but with no fans, I wouldn't really say that's a flagship event.

There aren't that many provinces or states with more than one NHL team - California, Florida, NY, Pennsylvania, Ontario and Alberta - so perhaps having it split between two NHL markets was a plus from the league's perspective?

From the Bettman press conference: "I’m aware of the bid,” he said. “Bids are being evaluated. Nothing has been finalized, but it was a good bid. I’m not prepared to tell you today that it was or was not the winning bid, but certainly it’s a bid that people could be very proud of."

The use of past tense here suggest a preliminary host has been chosen, and they're finalizing things. It would make sense to be visiting that city with an under construction arena to check on the progress and the future venue. I also don't think the province would've put money into this without some discussion with the NHL. We also have two of the newest arenas in the NHL with probably the least amount of competing events, so the most scheduling flexibility for the NHL.
