Calgary & Alberta Economy

People may have not seen these, from the CBEC report to council that was only released with redactions (I have an early copy that only had black boxes over the redactions and that you can grab images from) :

Some things have obviously changed, but it is a good base point to start from. Especially having lost the Corral and Saddledome, good to know I wasn't crazy to think they could use the Nutrien Events Centre.

I still think you have a great success spreading out the events to Edmonton and/or Red Deer. If they're willing to reinvest in the sliding track ($20 million) and ski jumps ($70 million) in Calgary you don't need Whistler. That is a hefty price to pay but maybe by 2042 Whistler won't be maintaining their sliding track or ski jumps (I'm not sure they're maintaining their ski jumps now, Canadian athletes are training in Slovenia).

There was also a news story yesterday about them moving up the game to January because hosting the Paralympics in March is becoming a challenge. I think the 2042 games would be the first they would do that for but why not move earlier games up into January too?

Outside of renovations, those two venues will be big investments for sure, but if it can be a joint bid with Edmonton, that lessen the need for at least 1 arena. I hope we don't wait too long, the longer we wait, the more in disrepair the venues become until it no longer makes sense.

The Olympic Oval is in need of major repairs too, they need to replace the entire floor and coolant system.
It is the only ISU CoE facility in Canada, hopefully we get some Federal funds for it. With limited facilities, we host a decent amount of non-Olympics events and athletes from around the world, would be a shame to lose that. I find it hard to see the Provincial gov doing much.

It is also in the riding of the only Liberal in the city. So maybe something can be worked out between the Province, Feds, and the City. I think the province has to be involved because the University is provincial. This whole, neglected sports facilities not really being used by the University but being located on a university campus thing is a problem (See McMahon). Especially since University's have been underfunded for a while now. They're definitely not going to spend any money they do have on something that doesn't help the University at all.

I don't think the University is starved of funds, but it's obvious why they wouldn't want to fund it. There should be some transfer agreement where the ownership goes to the city or someone else while the University maintains ownership of the land.

The university spends a lot of money, but can't reallocate the funds it spends like a government can. The university is also starved for funds, with a 30% cut in provincial funding since the UCP took office iirc.
