Sorry to divert from the Fairmont project, but the bolded above - is this ANOTHER completely new hotel by Truman? Maybe Fairmont-adjacent somehow? This CMLC release just came out today...

I don't want to stop the speculation, since it is fun, but when Urb speaks, I listen. If this cleans up that corner of 11th and 5th, I'll be very happy. And I do think it is a good location, it is close to the core of downtown and an up-and-coming part of the Beltline, especially with all of Truman's other developments.

My ideal would've been 1st and 17th, where the Sovereign sales centre is, straight shot into Stampede Park and into downtown.

I still go back to.... "Fairmont Calgary is a direct beneficiary of the Stampede Park transformation project, a major revitalization of Calgary's Culture and Entertainment District centered around the government funded $500 million expansion of its BMO Centre, completed in 2024"

A release that explicitly mentions that, it's 100% going in the Rivers district

There have been rumblings of something coming on that PBA 17th & 1st SW lot.

TBH, I highly doubt Fairmont would ever allow its branding to be in a place like the Rivers district. Maybe in 20 years when it's built out, but imagine being a guest paying luxury hotel prices in the middle of the Rivers district.

That would be a great location. It's a location with direct walk-able routes to the Stampede, Downtown, and of course the rest of 17th Ave as well as Mission. The best location IMO would be if it was part of Vesta's Broadway development. Unfortunately that's not likely, but we can dream :)

Is that true? Fairmont isn't what it used to be after Accor bought them. There's a Fairmont at the YVR airport, which is not that different from our Marriott in-terminal airport. Fairmont Palliser is dated, and it's priced cheaper than the Le Germain next door. If they wanted to keep the luxury image, they would've renovated or continued to charge elevated prices.

Luxury brand might be debatable, but it's still generally considered a upscale brand. I honestly can't see them or any other upscale brand wanting to be in the rivers district unless it was already built out.

This article points to what you were saying about the brand image sliding and that the brand maybe isn't what it used to be, but also mentions that they want to move it back into luxury brand territory. some of the more recent Fairmont hotels that are new builds like Tokyo, Austin, Vancouver or Beijing still fit the upscale branding.
