Lame….should have been named after an important figure in Flames/Calgary history.
Does the City or the Flames get those bucks? If Esso/Imperial is bucking up some $$ to put their logo on it I say have at it.
Great question. I don't see why the City wouldn't get this money. They own the arena and this isn't related to the Flames as it is a community arena.Does the City or the Flames get those bucks?
And ya, Imperial is no longer Canadian in my books, the 70% owned by Exxon always sucked, but it did help keep the funding for Kearl to be fair - but with essentially all non-field staff now moving to either India low wage or Houston, I take my money elsewhere.
I wasn't hoping that was the case but I actually clicked the news story (I don't know why I didn't before)... ya its flames money I thinkGreat question. I don't see why the City wouldn't get this money. They own the arena and this isn't related to the Flames as it is a community arena.
The Calgary Flames and Imperial today announced a partnership in support of the Esso Community Arena, a 1,000-seat indoor community rink located at Scotia Place, scheduled to open in 2027. As Calgary’s only downtown indoor community rink, the Esso Community Arena will be an integral component of the Scotia Place development and surrounding district
Probably a dumb question (and I can probably guess the answer), as the operators of the facility do the Flames pay for maintenance or any upgrades that are needed (knowing that upgrades hopefully won't be needed for some years) or is that on the taxpayers as well?I think the Flames get sponsorship dollars. They're operating the facility.
CSEC is responsible for the operations/maintenance/repairs....void of any significant structural failure i'd imagine. Not sure on "lifespan improvements", ie: major reno in 20-25 years....but by that time the flames would have paid back ~$500M, so in they could re-partner on a new dealProbably a dumb question (and I can probably guess the answer), as the operators of the facility do the Flames pay for maintenance or any upgrades that are needed (knowing that upgrades hopefully won't be needed for some years) or is that on the taxpayers as well?
I do wonder how many more sponsorships are to come. Someone mentioned the entrances, then there's the outdoor and indoor plaza, premium seats and the different clubs and restaurant/bars. They should be able to create a pretty steady drip of news about all these different things as we edge closer to the opening. I assume we'll see more interior renderings as the sponsorships for the different spaces get announced. And there is the experience centre that is on its way.I don't mind the Esso thing, they have a pretty good history with hockey in Calgary.
I don't think every little detail will be sponsored. Probably a few restaurants and clubs and maybe a section like the Westjet flight deck in Rogers Centre. I'm always surprised in Calgary, despite having some massive companies, none of them have their logos on buildings. That there isn't a Suncor/Petro Canada logo on the Suncor Energy Centre or TC and Enbridge on their head offices. Enbridge doesn't even name their own tower, and just leaving it as Fifth Avenue Place.I do wonder how many more sponsorships are to come. This also made me think... I see ads with Esso tying them to hockey. And this could be because we have the Winter Olympics in just over a week, but even with the World Cup in Canada this summer, you don't see a lot of brands and their marketing tying themselves to soccer. Arguably, soccer has a much higher potential ceiling. Granted right now the bar is on the floor when it comes to Soccer Canada.
