Calgary & Alberta Economy

If only China had experience with speed running infrastructure projects... Lol

Agree with the rest of your post though, sounds like the immediate impact of the deal is just rolling back to 2023 imports.

Exciting announcement at first, but the details mute it. It'd be nice to see the 50% under 35k target set for 2028 at least..
They're good at physical infrastructure. If they needed to build a new port to export cars, I'm confident it'll get done very fast. But this is regulatory approvals, setting up a distribution/service network, meeting North American safety laws, etc. That's not been the traditional strong suit of Chinese companies. Sounds like one is going to try though.

This is one of their main SUV models.

What is it that has beef prices so high? I can't afford to make steaks anymore, and I make good money!

I remember the drought a couple years ago had feed prices skyrocketing that affected it, but it has to be deeper than that.
Production is going up, but the world is getting richer faster.

Plus looking at this graph, if you were a farmer in 2023, would you predict that feeding cattle through the drought made more sense, or mitigating losses from potential falls to recent norms.

Bad news for EV enthusiasts and canola farmers.
Guess Carney's speech pushed some buttons.

Carney has not taken media questions since returning to Canada from his trip to China, Qatar and Davos — and in a week where he twice spoke out forcefully against Trump.

The prime minister was scheduled to take reporters' questions after two days of meetings with his front benches in Quebec City — standard fare at these retreats. But moments before Carney was expected to appear, his news conference was cancelled.

Sounds like something big is about to drop..
I could guess, but I'd rather not.

Honestly Carney is doing what he needs to. The only way we have any leverage at the table is to band together.

Sure, things will be rough but it needs to be done. These tantrums actually tells me we're on the right path
We are at an important crossroads right now.
-If we continue with China and Trump applies the 100% tariffs it would have a major effect on us, but it would also on the US to a certain degree. Oil is the key commodity. If he ever put a 100% tariff on our oil it would instantly throw their economy into a spin. Such a drastic spin that he might not survive past the mid terms, which is what I'm hoping.
-If we give in, it will be less rocky for us, but things will continue like this for another 3 years and possibly longer. Or he might not survive the mid terms either way.

Hard to know which is the best way to go Until Trump is gone it's going to be rocky not matter what.

That was my gut take too, they couldn't afford to go without AB oil until VZ increased production, but now I'm not sure that the case..

The US has been a net exporter of oil for a few years now, with the surplus being a bit over half of what they get from Canada.

I'm not an industry expert on this, but seems like it'd be easier for the US to import 4mbpd from someone else than it'd be for Canada to sell the same to someone else, without more coastal pipes in place.

My references, such as they are:

I was going to say he supported our deal with China last week, but of course that was when all of his focus was on Greenland.

Hopefully next week something else will draw his ire.

Is Carney secretly playing 7D chess and sponsoring ICE protests? That might have done the trick..

Carney is clearly a smart guy, hearing him speak is a refreshing change compared to nearly everyone else in the federal political world in the last decade.

But smarts are just one part of the game, and often times smart people have trouble communicating with people that aren't at their level. Many can also have trouble reading a room..

I suppose time will tell if this smart man is also wise.
