8% increase in August is huge, especially considering transborder is flat. Nice to see a huge increase in domestic, I'm hoping it because more people are traveling within Canada this summer.

Essentially it's because of distance and there needs to be demand for daily flights
The distance related to altitude makes sense, but I would say demand should easily be there, especially to India. If you look at the South Asian population across the prairie‘s and the area where WestJet dominates service it’s quite a large population. I bet if WestJet had an A350 they would fire up that route. Quite possibly the same for Manila.

Great numbers for YYC, although I have to say I’m surprised that transporter traffic is still up even if it’s only 1.5%
Is this because WestJet has canceled some transporter flight and other cities like Winnipeg or Edmonton, etc. And are now routing those people through Calgary?

I would say that's likely the case as WS canceled some transborder flights from other cities in western Canada. Not many, but enough to probably cause some extra routing through YYC.

Can't speak for others but my partner and I have definitely done a couple domestic trips instead of Montana this year

India is notoriously cheap margin traffic, another thing that makes operating a long route like this from a city like Calgary a challenge or perhaps not even worth it.

We hadn't planned anything to the US this year, but usually do a trip south once every couple of years. Definitely won't be anyone for at least three years.

Wonder if the big August increase can be attributed to the AC strike in August? AC Hub cities are down during that period. Nice we may have picked up some slack

There's enough traffic to India and SE Asia for many North American cities, but very few have direct flights because the margins are low, premium seats are hard to fill. Air Canada flies a YYC-Delhi route but it stops in LHR. The Toronto-Mumbai route is only 4 times weekly and the only direct flight from Canada to Mumbai, while Vancouver for sure has the population to have a flight. They can probably increase ICN frequency and add a China flight. Both also enable connection being in NE Asia.
