Calgary to Canmore Trail

A better bus system should be the higher priority:
-high frequency between Banff and Canmore
-transfers in Banff townsite to lower frequency shuttles to desinations within the park such as the Hotsprings/Gondola/Rimrock, Sunshine, Johnston Canyon, Ski Louise, Lake Louise Townsite, Lake Louise/Chateau

Much of the environmental concern can be mitigated by reducing private vehicle usage. Parks Canada collects more than enough admission revenue to subsidize the bus system. It could easily whack some employees out east and redirect funds to a bus system.

This already exists...at least the CGY-Banff On-It bus service was doing pretty well IIRC before COVID de-railed everything.

Banff/Canmore local/regional transit is already very good.

That said, the longer the duration of a trip, the more a train>coach.

Canmore Council has voted to pursue an Alberta Court of Appeal challenge to the Property Rights Tribunal decision on Smith Creek and Three Sisters Village.

Brutal - Canmore has to have some of the worst NIMBY-types in the province. People who fight development under the guise of being concerned about wildlife when their actual concern is inflating their own property value.

Yeap. Especially laughable when NIMBY's raise climate change concerns. Limiting development in one area only drives it to another, so the climate change implications always wash.

Impacts to wildlife can only be assessed at the Provincal level, as wilflife is capable of movement.

If you could bike to Banff from Calgary on a separated pathway that would be revolutionary. Throw down a few campsites and with the advent of e-bikes for the less mobile and it would become a classic weekend adventure getaway in the region.

Would be such a cool option for people visiting Calgary/Banff.

It's 2035, you want to visit Calgary/Banff, you're trying to decide between the train or trail option... In the end you take the trail option out and camp along the way while deciding to train back into Calgary for a night downtown. You see a play/concert at Arts Commons. The next morning you enjoy breakfast at the Pavilion on Olympic Plaza as birds play in the fountain.

The tourism package if the train and trail, and more hotels in Banff are finished is pretty compelling. Add in the convention centre, could evolve into one of the premier sites worldwide.

It is just too bad couldn't highlight this year with the G7. Alas.

It's a about ~130 - 150km of trail, which would be doable in a single day for the more serious cyclists. However if you have a few campgrounds to break it up, you'd really attract the family and more leisurely crowd that's more interested in a 30 - 60km / day trip. With e-bikes becoming main stream it wouldn't be difficult to imagine a ton of people using it.

The game changer is the separate pathway away from Highway 1. I can't take a kid on a bike on Highway 1, but I could easily do some bike camping with a kid on a pathway nearby.

Especially if there's a business setup to rent you a package of everything you need. Bike camping is pretty niche but picking up your setup and heading off for a couple nights could be pretty fun and much more barrier free than needing to buy everything.

You could have some small non-vehicle campgrounds along the way and a small village type area in the middle containing a couple of smaller motels or glamping style accommodations, with a small convenient store and a couple of resto pubs. Maybe have a train station near it so people could do the train for part of the trip.

I'm quite excited for the possibilities around this. A train and cycle track between Calgary and Banff opens up so many possibilities. These days so many people are into 'experiences' and this could be an experience that could really draw people.
