A "Tuesday surprise"...new DP submitted, this one for a 35-ish storey 390-foot tower called "The Morrison" at 1400 ST SW. Developer is Western Securities, architect is Hindle.

I like this a lot actually. Nice balconies for all unit, a different colour palette from the charcoal and white and looks to be brick.

Only bummer is I had heard Western Securities had a parcel down 1 St SW and was under the impression it was this lot:

Does anyone know who owns this lot?

It's crazy so many projects are popping up when the rental market is quite dire and oversupply will make it even worse. The developers must have great confidence in the long term outlook of Calgary

WS also owns this one. It includes the Boardwalk building. A land use application is incoming...

Agreed, I'm a fan too - it's a simple but attractive building. The base of the building is brick and the tower portion is metal panels, although they are using red-brown and bronze-gold colours which should make for a nice change from what we usually see.

Most of the reports I've seen recently are calling the rental market "balanced" after a few years of really tight supply. Regardless, keep in mind that there won't be much supply coming onstream in the downtown/Beltline market for a couple years, since most of the projects currently underway only started a year ago.

I'm 50/50 on the design of this one; something here is hesitating me from loving this (versus just liking it). I'd like to see the final material selection. That said, Hindle is quickly becoming one of my fave design firms in Alberta right now, so I will approach this one with pragmatism and look forward to what comes of this one.
