Work on a new bridge spanning the Bow River is nearing completion, and will soon provide access to the Calgary Zoo via the south side of St. George's Island. A previous 1908-built bridge — originally designed to accommodate horse and buggy traffic — was operating in a reduced capacity during the last few years, with trucks barred from using the bridge following the 2013 flood.

The previous bridge was removed early in the year after almost 100 years of operation, and construction activity for its new replacement is now winding down. Learning from past experience, the new bridge has been designed with improved flood resistance, easier maintenance, better accommodations for cyclists and pedestrians, and a 100-year lifespan. The new bridge is scheduled to open to traffic in the coming weeks, dependent on weather conditions.

A bronze-cast art installation called Shifting Monument is one of the final remaining elements to be installed on the bridge. Designed by Hamilton-based artist Brandon Vickerd, the installation will take on the form of a traditional monument when viewed from a distance, transforming into a scattering flock of sparrows as the viewer moves closer to the art.

While the $26 million bridge is expected to enter service before the end of 2017, work on the final landscaping, commemoration, and public art component aren't expected to wrap up until next year.

Once the dust settles for the 12 Street Bridge replacement and the related Zoo Flood Mitigation Project, a similar replacement project is expected to begin for the nearby 9 Avenue S.E. Bridge in 2018, which currently carries traffic over the Elbow River.
