Keen observers of the urban development landscape in Calgary are quite familiar with the rapid pace of growth in the East Village. But even further beyond the fringes of downtown, portions of Inglewood have also changed their appearance to near unrecognizable states. Originally known as Atlantic Avenue, 9th Avenue just east of 11th Street SE has become a hotbed of activity recently, with major alterations to the streetscape both completed and in the works.

In just seven years, this stretch of Inglewood has undergone a remarkable change that will be magnified in the coming years. In the above photo, taken in October 2010, the four-storey Atlantic Avenue Art Block and The Bow, previously Calgary's tallest building, were under construction. A gas station and the Art Deco Inglewood Bottle Depot, later converted into a storefront for Frosst Books, can be seen on the right.

November 2017 depicts a main street in transition. The completed Atlantic Avenue Art Block, designed by Abugov Kaspar, now houses 31,000 square feet of retail space, offices for Kasian Architecture, and the 16,000-square-foot Esker Gallery. The brick and glass material palette was chosen to unite the building with its surrounding historic context.

On the right, the old Bottle Depot and gas station have been erased from the neighbourhood. Hoarding for Greenview's AVLI on Atlantic development now characterizes the property, while the upcoming South Bank development seeks intensification on the adjacent lot.

Brookfield Place is by far the biggest addition to the downtown skyline since 2010. Though The Bow's proximity to Inglewood makes the building appear taller, Brookfield Place bests the Foster landmark by 11 metres. The twisting profile of the under-construction Telus Sky is visibly rising in front of Brookfield Place, which eventually, is anticipated to launch a sibling tower.
