Just five months removed from the province's announcement that a $1.4 billion Calgary Cancer Centre would be built, construction on the state-of-the-art facility has begun ahead of schedule. Located at the northeast corner of the Foothills Medical Centre in northwest Calgary, the Stantec and DIALOG-designed project is expected to bring 1,500 jobs to the local economy over the next six years.

"Our government continues to make good on its promise to make life better for Albertans by investing in much-needed infrastructure projects like the new Calgary Cancer Centre," said Premier Rachel Notley. "I'm proud to see this project begin construction, which will add jobs, boost the local economy and give hope to patients and families in Calgary and southern Alberta."

Beginning construction two months ahead of schedule, the Calgary Cancer Centre would offer comprehensive care, cancer research and education within a one million-square-foot complex. Outpatient cancer clinics, more than 100 patient exam rooms, 160 inpatient unit beds, over 100 chemotherapy chairs, several research laboratories, and 15 radiation vaults will be included in the facility when it opens in 2023. It will have double the space available for clinical trails compared to the Tom Baker Centre.

PCL Construction Management is building the Calgary Cancer Centre. The facility will be physically connected to other buildings on the Foothills campus via an elevated walkway. The west lane and sidewalk on 29 Street will be closed during construction, with pedestrian traffic reallocated to the east side of the street. Excavation, shoring and piling will begin this month and continue into the spring of 2018.
