The last time we visited construction of The Hat in East Village, a crane base had just been installed at the bed of the building's excavation. That was in June, and just a few short months later, activity on the 28-storey Cidex Group project has begun above ground, with wall forms now visible from the street.

Unlike the development's recently risen neighbours, the $100 million residential project is entirely rental. It will be the first residential rental project in the revitalized East Village, offering one-, two-, and three-bedroom units to young professionals and families. A planned onsite childcare centre aims to eliminate a burdensome stop on the daily commute of its residents.

The 236,000-square-foot development at 5th Street and 7th Avenue SE includes 221 units in total, with 66 one-bedroom and studio apartments, 123 two-bedroom units and 32 three-bedroom units.

Renderings for the NORR Architects-designed development show a sprawling outdoor amenities deck equipped with a barbecue station. On the ground, a meandering line of benches and custom paving stitch together a public realm accented by a corner public art sculpture.
