The City of Calgary published a series of photos in the spring highlighting the construction progress of the GEC Architecture-designed Rocky Ridge Recreation Facility at the northwestern edge of the city. On October 20, the City-owned facility was handed over to the Calgary YMCA in advance of the organization's move into the space.

To be known as Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge, the interior is now being furnished with the promised amenities ahead of the building's opening on January 15, 2018. Final touches to the complex, including an outdoor skatepark and landscaping elements, will be completed in the summer of 2018. The building is set within a natural park and reconstructed wetland.

The 284,000-square-foot recreation hub is equipped with indoor pools and a waterpark, an ice skating surface, an NHL-sized hockey rink, three full gymnasiums, a fitness centre, 160-metre running track, a library, art and display spaces, a 250-seat theatre, and a childcare facility. The undulating profile, golden exterior, and ribbon-like ceiling of the building — boasting the largest wood roof in North America — were developed with input from community associations, aboriginal groups and residents.
