Calgary's Beltline neighbourhood will soon have another highrise tower to grace its skyline. The Underwood Tower, a 31-storey, 192-unit residential building is starting construction. Designed by Zeidler BKDI Architects, the tower is the second phase of the Union Square towers project. The first tower was completed in 2009, but the second phase was put on hold due to a downturn in the condominium market.

Since that time, the design of the second tower has been tweaked, with four more floors and 18 more units added. The building's exterior materials have changed slightly as well.

Last week a drilling rig arrived on site, signalling that the general contractor ITC is preparing to begin construction. A second drilling unit is expected to arrive shortly, with work to follow.

Aside from some structural and cosmetic changes, the development has changed from a condominium project to a rental project and is now being funded by Calgary-based Western Securities instead of Apex Homes.

Completion of the building will be welcome news to neighbours on that street, and for the Beltline in general, as it will mean the end of an empty gravel lot and the addition of more retail.
