A large scale model inside the Toronto offices of Allied Properties has presented a closer look at one of Calgary's most anticipated and unique developments. Together with Vancouver-based Westbank, Allied is a key partner in the dramatic Telus Sky development, which will reshape the corner of 7th Avenue SW and Centre Street South by injecting residential, office, and retail space into the downtown core.

The 59-storey project by the daring architecture firm of Bjarke Ingels Group, together with the local expertise of Dialog, imagines a twisting volume of glass and anodized aluminum. The base of the building activates the senses with a handmade Fazioli piano filling the airy lobby with music. A soaring nine-storey atrium is enhanced by a green planter wall and cafe. Floors four through 29 contain the tower's column-free office spaces. Tenants can treat themselves to "Calgary's finest restaurant" on the second floor after working out in the fully equipped fitness and health centre.

The captivating design amalgamates the needs of modern office space — deep floor plates and high ceilings — with the livable and functional spaces that residents demand. Telus Sky's rectangular footprint begins to be pulled inward as the building ascends, creating narrower floor plates to accommodate the upper residential levels. The elevations transition from a smooth facade to an envelope composed of protruding boxes. The result is a series of floor plates that create dedicated space for residential balconies and terraces. The two distinct sections are seamlessly blended together to create a uniform and eye-catching profile. The model displays this synergy in three-dimensional form.

Telus Sky's concrete core has risen above the ground and can be seen peeking above the construction hoarding marking the perimeter of the site. When the floor plates begin taking shape around the central shaft, photographers will likely be out in full force documenting the interesting assembly and evolving silhouette of this exciting project.
