    Skyway Parade | 37m | 12s | Skyvision Development | Green Birch Architecture

Certainly a lot of parking for a development right next to a future train station. I wonder the developer was doing this design with the station location already decided as the north side of CHB, if they would have designed it with less parking? The problem with this type of location is that...

    Calgary Event Centre | 36.85m | 11s | CSEC | HOK

I'm on the fence about whether to renovate McMahon, or to put our efforts into a smaller stadium/large field house say around 20-25,000 that could be used for multiple sports. I've been to a couple of football matches in Europe in stadiums that were smaller, and it was quite enjoyable. The...

    Urban Development and Proposals Discussion

From what I've seen, opposition to blanket zoning seems to be from people of all colors and sexes, but almost exclusively from people who are owners of single or semi detached homes, even if those homes aren't in an affluent neighborhood.

I know with inflation pressures, etc.. this won't be a popular take, but we do some some of the lowest property taxes in the county. If those went up a bit more, we can pat our head and rub our tummy. ;)

I'll be honest, I've only used the BRT once, trying the Max Purple on a Saturday after it first opened, so I don't have an opinion either way. I would say that any shortcomings are more about the mgmt of the system rather than the infrastructure. They can always increase the schedule more, now...

    Calgary Transit

We’ll have to agree to disagree 😉 I don’t think they’ve ever hit the brakes since the first LRT leg opened in 1981. There has been constant expansion, additions and planning, with much of the additions coming in spurts, but still constant. It look like much hasn’t been happening with the last...

    Calgary Transit

I wouldn't say Calgary has dropped the ball in general. Calgary built their extensions back in the 90's and early 2000's and extending them more isn't something badly needed whereas Edmonton is just doing that now. The four branches of the two Calgary lines already go to the far ends of the...

Calgary becoming the next Detroit: A look 10 years later.

Thanks for that in-depth analysis @ByeByeBaby. This is great insight into the industry and its trends. Aside from the benefit of more accurate info, it more or less re-enforces that the economy is becoming less reliant on oil and gas. It's still the biggest single industry, but Calgary isn't as...

There was a driller on site at one time, but it doesn't look like piles were installed. It could be that they had the excavator levelling the are in preparation for drilling. Let's hope.

    Uptown at Westbrook | 37m | 12s | Matco Group | Zeidler

I'd like to see the city sell off the parcel in chunks to more than one developer instead of one parcel to one developer. Not only would we hopefully get some diversity in the architecture, but I think there would be a better chance of it getting built out. Less risk and resources for each...

Calgary becoming the next Detroit: A look 10 years later.

The 42K figure already includes people who work indirectly for the industry (how that breaks down exactly, I'm not sure). I recall seeing that the number of people who work directly for an oil or gas company is not very high...something like 12K. (maybe someone can confirm this) The numbers do...

Calgary becoming the next Detroit: A look 10 years later.

That's a good way to put it. Worst case scenario is Calgary ends up like a Winnipeg, or Hamilton, maybe a Windsor, etc.. which is not a bad scenario, and certainly light years away from the next Detroit. I think Calgary will end up more like a Denver Dallas or Houston, where a skilled labour +...

Calgary becoming the next Detroit: A look 10 years later.

Definitely part if it also, plus race issues were still a big thing in the 70’s.and white flight was still happening. Detroit’s issues really started in the 40’s with a population peak was 1950 and was all downhill from there. It’s hard to pinpoint one reason, but if I had to sum it up I would...

Calgary becoming the next Detroit: A look 10 years later.

Agreed, it's a bunch factors tied together, I probably should have worded it differently, as not being the main cause, but a quicker cause than many other cities. The race riots of 67 was the event that had the most impact, with almost 200,000 leaving over a two year period, but a number plants...

It's not much different here, but also it's something we have been seeing with most cities. Industry moves out to areas with cheaper land, etc.. In Detroit's case the moves were big and over a fairly short period, and also triggered white flight in a big way. Much worse white flight than other...
